For organisations

The Plus Importance Project is a new organisation focused on improving understanding and inclusion of people in the + of LGBT+, defined as sexualities, gender identities and sex characteristics including, but not limited to, asexual, genderfluid, genderqueer, intersex, non-binary, pansexual and queer.

Of LGBT+ people, the proportion identifying in the + has grown significantly in recent years and, with young people most likely to identify in the +, it is particularly important for organisations to improve their understanding and their practices to better include those in the + so that they can remain relevant.

Why is this important?

People in the + often report most negatively on a range of factors. For example, intersex people are most likely to experience physical or sexual attacks, asexual people are most likely to receive a negative response when coming out and non-binary people are particularly likely to have felt over the last year that life was not worth living. Collectively, we all experience a lack of understanding and acceptance of our identities.

Our Pilot Scheme

We are launching a pilot scheme, working with organisations to improve understanding, change practices and develop a more inclusive culture. We aim for our pilot to take place between May and October 2024 and involve 12 organisations.

For an organisation to be eligible for our pilot scheme, they must:

  • have a turnover under £1 million
  • be a constituted group e.g. a charity, company, community group or other organisation with a formal structure and written rules on how to operate
  • be based in Bristol or have a significant presence in/connection to Bristol

Our capacity

If we have more interest than capacity, we will select organisations for our pilot scheme that we feel will provide us with the best opportunity to get detailed feedback on our offer from a wide range of organisations. Any organisations not selected for our pilot scheme will be prioritised when deciding to work with organisations after our pilot period.

By joining our pilot project, we will:

  • Run a 2 hour training session for your leadership team, staff, volunteers and/or members. This training session could take place in person, either at your organisation’s venue or an external venue, or online. We feel that in person training is likely to be most effective so this is our strong preference but, for the purposes of our pilot scheme, we intend to trial online training with a few organisations to understand whether this is an effective alternative.
  • Provide a review service where we will look over your governing document, policies, web content, forms, handbooks and other content and suggest changes to make them more inclusive of people in the + of LGBT+.
  • Work with you to create a culture strategy designed at embedding long term improvements to inclusivity of people in the + of LGBT+.
  • Include you in our update service where we will keep you informed of any changes to our best practice guidance.

Where practicable, we aim to offer this pilot scheme free of charge to participating organisations.

In return, we expect you to:

  • Actively engage with each part of our offer
  • Provide detailed feedback on each aspect of our offer and our overall offer
  • Allow us to take some photos and videos of our work with your organisation

If you are satisfied with our offer, we also ask that you are willing to:

  • Provide us with a testimonial
  • Recommend us to another organisation
  • Act as a referee for us, such as for grant applications

We hope to use our pilot to gather detailed feedback on what works well and where we should make changes. We also aim to start demonstrating our impact so we can justify charging organisations we work with in the future.
